Video: Ride-height control system

f1 en vivo
"Reactive ride-height system" has become a common word in all Formula 1 teams for the upcoming season that is about to begin.

The preseason has started with a strong mood after the filtration of the first significant development: a ride height control system, in this case applied only to the front wheels of the car. The Lotus team, is willing to get back to the top and was the first of all on the track to test the height control system during the "Young drivers test" held in Abu Dhabi. Domenicali has recently said that Ferrari is also working on the same line and is waiting for the approval by the FIA.

What is the reactive system or ride-height control system?

When break pressure is applied a part of the oil goes to a small cylinder which elongates the front suspension strut. Normally you would see the front dip under the dynamic force shift from breaking. This systems compensates the dip by making a strut longer.

Barrichello: It’s taking longer than I thought

Barrichello out of F1

Barrichello admitted that he is trying to remain optimistic about his chances of staying in Williams, and in Formula One in this season, as negotiations over a new deal continue.

The Brazilian, the most experienced driver in F1 history, is hoping to start his 20th campaign but confirmed that he is contending for the Williams seat with at least two other drivers. Williams is one of only two teams left with a racing seat, and Barrichello is thought unlikely to go to HRT, just to remain a part of the back field.

There are more than half a dozen drivers currently waiting to hear whether they will be in F1 next year, we believe that Bruno Senna and Adrian Sutil remain Barrichello's biggest rivals, despite news that the German will face trial on assault charges. Vitaly Petrov, Jaime Alguersuari, Giedo van der Garde and Jerome d'Ambrosio also remain available, while doubt surrounds the strength of contract held by veterans Jarno Trulli, at Caterham, and Timo Glock, as Marussia.

“Well, it's taking longer than I wished for, to be honest,” Barrichello said. “I have been thinking positively, and have always put it this way: you've got to believe in things and, if they haven't happened just yet, you have got to believe that they have happened in your mind.

“I am fighting for the position. I think there are two other drivers who have potential to be driving at Williams, but I feel like I am quite a good candidate and that I should be driving there. There's lot of changes for the team – the engine, new people around – and I think what I can tell people at Williams is that experience comes "gratis", in a way. It's just there.

“Where are you going to find someone with my experience and so much of a will to do well? I still have so much feeling for the car and I want to drive it as fast as I can. I don't know how that is happening because, when I was in my 20s, I thought 'I don't know, maybe when I'm 30, I'm done'. I'm now 39 and I'm still feeling ready to go. I think this is the best thing that can be happening to me right now and I hope to be driving this year.”

d'Ambrosio and Van der Garde to race in F1?

The Benelux countries have been sparsely represented in motorsport's top flight in recent years, but two of its more prominent current stars believe that they still have a chance of landing an F1 race seat for 2012.

2012 Formula One Season
Jerome d'Ambrosio found himself the odd man out at Marussia Racing when Charles Pic appeared on the scene, while Giedo van der Garde has been quietly knocking on the F1 door for several seasons, apparently armed with a sponsor keen to expand its previous involvement in the series.

Both, however, are currently among a queue of drivers waiting to hear on the destiny of the two remaining vacancies, at Williams and HRT, before they can call themselves an F1 racer in 2012.

d'Ambrosio's management is confident that the Belgian - who did not disgrace himself alongside veteran Timo Glock at Marussia Virgin in 2011 - will be able to reveal his season's plans within the next ten days, although there was no hint whether it would involve a race or reserve role.

The 26-year old is represented by the same Gravity Sports Management team that vaulted GP2 champion Romain Grosjean back into the Renault - now Lotus F1 - team for 2012, and it is possible that d'Ambrosio could join the Frenchman by performing a test driver role at Enstone. However, the Belgian admits that he would prefer to compete this year, even if it means remaining at the back of the grid.

“We are thinking of the best solution for me to be in F1 for a long time," he told Belgium's La Derniere Heure, "Honestly, I'd prefer to race if I have the chance - and that possibility still exists.

“This week we have one last meeting and, with any luck, I will know very soon what I'll be doing this season.”

d'Ambrosio's manager, Benjamin Mignot, confirmed that a decision will be taken sooner rather than later, to ensure that his client is in a position to make the most of pre-season testing when it begins.
2012 Formula One Season
“A decision should be made within ten days in time for the start of winter testing at Jerez on 7 February,” he noted, “We are not spoken about much in the foreign press and that's fine, but I can assure you that we are still in the frame and that doors are still open.

“The situation is unchanged since Christmas. We have a reasonable budget for a F1 seat. I'm not talking about the amounts, but we consider Adrian Sutil the only real competitor.”

Ironically, Mignot's final comment would tend to suggest that d'Ambrosio is chasing the vacant seat at Williams, rather than HRT, which many outsiders believe that he is more likely to get. Sutil is known to have visited Williams' Grove facility before Christmas, and is listed in a group of hopefuls that also includes veteran Rubens Barrichello, former Lotus Renault pilots Bruno Senna and Vitaly Petrov and van der Garde, who shares common sponsorship ground with fashion brand McGregor.

2012 Formula One Season
Like d'Ambrosio, the Dutchman is preferring to keep a low profile while negotiations take place, but remains optimistic that a lengthy bid to break into the top flight will be resolved before too long.

“We are a little quiet, but we're working hard,” manager Jan-Paul ten Hoopen - who is also McGregor's commercial director - told f1today.nl, "We will let you know when there is any news."

While GP2 frontrunner van der Garde can also lean on billionaire father-in-law Marcel Boekhoorn, 2011 HRT incumbent Vitantonio Liuzzi can only wish for access to similar amounts of money.

Despite expressing a wish to remain with the Spanish minnow - and having a two-year deal, albeit one signed with the previous ownership - the Italian appears to be on the verge of losing his seat to a better-funded rival, with d'Ambrosio, Petrov and Senna rumoured to be chasing the seat alongside veteran returnee Pedro de la Rosa.

According to Belgium's La Libre newspaper, which quotes HRT technical director Jacky Eeckelaert, Liuzzi has not seized the chance to cement his place on the grid for 2012, despite occasionally helping HRT punch above its weight last season.

“He hasn't really confirmed himself after several chances, [and] we are looking more for a young driver with a lot of potential,” Eeckalaert explained, before going on to rule out the likes of Barrichello and a host of Spanish talent, including Jaime Alguersuari and Dani Clos, currently being linked to the soon-to-be Valencia-based squad.

“I don't think it's in the interests of the team to have a second Spanish driver,” he said, "and the same goes for the drivers approaching retirement.”

While his Russian backers may be of interest to HRT - despite its desire to be seen as having a greater Spanish aura this season - Petrov continues to be mentioned in connection with two seats that currently appear to be occupied.

The former Lotus Renault pilot has been linked to both Jarno Trulli's Caterham ride and the lead Marussia entry of Glock, despite both having apparently inked extensions to their contracts last summer.

Senna, meanwhile, has already been 'confirmed' at Williams by one if his sponsors - a claim denounced by both driver and team - but could still wind up filling the third driver role at Enstone if he fails to land a race seat.

Sutil and Barrichello continue to try and amass the financial backing needed to partner Pastor Maldonado at Williams, although the team is thought to look dimly on the German's apparent interest in replacing Felipe Massa at Ferrari in 2013. A similar far-reaching focus almost cost Sutil his ride at Force India for 2011, and could result in the German missing out altogether this year.

The remaining candidate for the vacant HRT seat, meanwhile, is understood to be former pilot Narain Karthikeyan, who is currently building support from his native India in a bid to return to the cockpit he vacated for Daniel Ricciardo midway through 2011.

Where to buy an old Formula One Car, the guide

f1 en vivo
Formula One soaks up millions each year, with some of the most technically advanced racing cars on the planet many fans can only dream of ever driving or even owning an F1 car. Much of the money is brought in through high-profile sponsorship deals and of course the hordes of fans flocking to events to see the machines and their drivers at events. A lot of this income goes towards making the cars better, faster and in turn more expensive.

Realistically, if you ever want to own an F1 car you’re going to have to save up for a while (be seriously rich); But what are the options? It’s not actually as impossible as it sounds. And if not an actual fully-running car, what is the next best thing?

Fully fledged F1 car

If we step back in time a bit it is actually a very viable option to buy an older Formula One car. Again, this isn’t cheap but we’ll start with "RaceCars". They offer race-used and ex-F1 cars from 1974 to as late as 1999. Admittedly these also range from fully running ready-to-race cars to engineless showcars. They provide actual vehicles from Benetton, Honda, Arrows and Tyrell with price tags ranging between €40,000 and €729,000. This is obviously determined by the age, usability and who drove it. The main site also offers a huge range of ex-race cars from all series including F3 and F3000 from the historical and modern eras. If an F1 car is just out of your price range then maybe you might want to settle for a single-seater for use on the track.

A newly formed company, PF1 has acquired some late-model Jordan, Jaguar and Super-Aguri cars which they have kitted out with Ford Cosworth V10 engines capable of kicking out a healthy 875 hp. Their intention is to help more wealthy fans own and drive an F1 car without the worry of maintaining it themselves. The UK based company charges £300,000 (€400,000) for the car, plus £2,500 (€3,300) for membership in Club PF1. This is actually fairly cheap if compared to the tag on a road-going supercar. As mentioned this covers the ownership, organization of track days, maintenance and garage space. Kind of like sponsoring an animal, like a cheetah… Except you get to drive it!

F1 Sales also offers older cars, mostly Benetton’s as can be seen on their site. If this is too much then you can always buy a high performance engine, although one starts to wonder what you’d do with it without a car to put it in. Again, some of these cars aren’t as much as you’d think considering their condition but a pretty penny all the same. They also provide other goods an services in relation to F1 but I’ll be getting to those later. It’s starting to become apparent that what seemed to be only possible in a dream world is certainly feasible.

Another site certainly worth a browse is Race Cars Direct. This is a multi-national listings site with a huge range of all sorts of cars. We spotted some 80's/90's Benetton's and other ex-F1 cars that are in running condition. The average price range is around €45,000 - €60,000 which is only the same as a pricey road car. Although maintenance may cost a bit on top, these could even make good trackday or just enthusiasts cars. As well as these there are several Formula 3 cars and other open wheelers while not the same kind of history are sure to be fun behind the wheel.

Private dealers such as Hall And Hall and Cars International Kensington also sell on many historic cars for collectors etc although these are only priced on request as they’re fairly serious business. The odd car or two can be found at auctioneers, which are again attended mostly by aristocrats that throw money at collector’s cars like it was nothing.

Mercedes no longer has McLaren shares

mercedes mclaren share
Mercedes-Benz has no longer involvement in McLaren team's actions.

McLaren uses Mercedes engines built in Brixworth, the British company began its association with Mercedes in 1995, which brought several world championships, the German automaker owned the 40 percent of the Woking team (McLaren).
In 2009, after the bought of Brawn by Mercedes, the british team expressed the need to become once again a private team: "The McLaren Group will become a fully independent entity" confirmed McLaren.

f1 en vivo por internet

However, until last year, Mercedes still owned a small part of the team. But there are several reports, which reveals that Mercedes and McLaren are not in a shareholder relationship from the first day of 2012, confirming a "withdrawal" by Mercedes of the British team.
McLaren will continue to use the Mercedes V8 engine for free this year and next year, 2013, will have to pay for the services of Mercedes.

We are eager to know, with the introduction of the new six-cylinder (new rules), if the Woking team will elect to stay with Mercedes in 2014.

Boullier and Renault critical race

Heidfeld Buemi crash

Renault boss Eric Boullier says his team must start raising its game from the Hungarian Grand Prix following a series of disappointing results.
With the team having failed to deliver the kind of strong performances seen in the first part of the season, Boullier admitted Renault has not been improving quickly enough.
And he reckons the team must starting making progress from Hungary given how competitive the F1 field is this year.
"I've expected improvement from our car for a number of races now, and we are making improvement, but we have got to get our heads down and make bigger strides," said Boullier ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
"It's a competitive field out there, with Force India and Sauber also competing in higher positions, so we've got to raise our game starting in Hungary."
Boullier said no one in the team was happy with its competitiveness, and the Frenchman conceded the updates introduced in the German Grand Prix last weekend had not been enough.

Renault development

"I've made no secret of the fact that I'm not satisfied with where we are, no one in the team is," he said. "We started the season well, but that feels like a while ago now and we have to face the facts, which are that we've been off the pace and we are trying hard to put that right.
"We brought some developments to the car in Germany, which didn't produce nearly enough so we are now all eyes forward to Hungary to ensure we have the opportunity to head on our summer breaks on a high."

Eric Boullier unhappy
Technical director James Allison said there were "a lot" of new updates for the upcoming races.
"We have quite lot of improvements to deliver over the next five races," he said. "These developments are largely as a result of research work that is already complete, leaving us with the task of designing and manufacturing them for use in the races.
"By the time the summer break is complete, most of our factory research resource and around half of our manufacturing capacity will have transferred to next year's car."

Boullier y Renault en una carrera critica

Heidfeld Buemi choque
