"Team Lotus" wants to change their name and call it "Caterham F1 Team" while the Renault team wants to be called "Lotus", the two teams will have to wait until the F1 commission meets . F1 commission usually meets on the first week of December, but Bernie Ecclestone has proposed to meet in the first week of November.
Both teams could change the names agreeing to pay a fine, the price of it is 40 million euros in the case of Renault and therefore they prefer to take the matter to a vote in committee rather than pay that amount. Last week it seemed to be an issue with a quick solution, but other teams have shown interest in getting involved and discuss the matter.
In particular Sauber strives to complicate matters, since they believe that the name change of the teams damages the images of the category. But Ferrari and HRT are also interested and have proposed a debate in the commission of F1, which is made by the teams, FIA, FOM, sponsors and owners of the circuits. The commission has 26 members and 18 votes would be needed for these teams to change their names.
While it is understandable that the opposing teams are always complicating things for others is a legitimate request for a change of name because behind this there are economic interests.
Renault has no shares in the team, "Renault GP" (the shares were bought by Gerard Lopez and brought the new sponsor Group Lotus), so its logic the name change. But the bosses of the category need to ensure the intentions of "Group Lotus' at a long-term before approving these changes.
Something similar happened with Arrows in 1996, Tom Walkinshaw wanted to call it TWR F1. Ron Dennis at the time wanted to prevent teams with classic names from changing their names. A few years later BAR bought Tyrrell and after Walkinshaw complained, was allowed to rename the BAR team.
That team then called Honda, Brawn and now Mercedes. The FIA said this about Mercedes: "The committee accept that Brawn change its name to Mercedes. The team will continue to receive earnings from previous races "
