McLaren to 'take care of' Lewis Hamilton

Jonathan Neale
McLaren director Jonathan Neale, says Lewis Hamilton should not have any doubt about the level of support and understanding within his team.
Hamilton has not finished on the podium after the victory at the German Grand Prix in July, and has been involved in a series of incidents during this time - while his teammate Jenson Button has had two wins and is second in the championship.
However, Neale said McLaren is giving maximum support to Hamilton instead of putting pressure on him.

"The biggest critic of Lewis is himself," said Neale. "He is desperate to win and not entirely happy when your teammate or someone else is winning the race or the championship. It is a hard man to himself and he is very disappointed.

"Lewis is a phenomenal driver. He had 16 wins. It is always amazing in the circuit, always in a fight and we love him for that.
"I certainly know that feeling, and he understands that we are 100 percent behind him.
"We want to take care of him. It is a difficult season for him. He is not really comfortable with the car this year, but what he has done has been fantastic."

He also said not to make too much about the sittuation and the criticism by the media.

"Remember that professional sport is a brutal business," said Neale.
"We can all turn around and say, 'Where is Lewis? But the reality is that it is a very fast driver. It is a very nice guy and he puts his heart and everything in it."

Hamilton finished fifth in the Grand Prix of Japan, while Button won the race. Neale believes that Hamilton was complicated by a misinterpretation of the data which led him to make a first pit stop on lap eight.

"We are responsible as to why he was not able to get the rear tire performance that Jenson was able to get," said Neale.

Hamilton will bounce back
Neale added that the current fit of Button is a reminder that 26-year-old Hamilton is still developing as a driver.
"Both drivers are getting better," said Neale. "Many will say that Jenson is probably driving better than ever and continues to get stronger.

"I'm sure Lewis has some things to learn and can improve, but I have twice the age of Lewis and the same goes for me too - I'm anything compared with the finished product."
